Does using a clicker work when training your German Shepherd?

A clicker can be a very useful tool when attempting to train or correct behavioural issues with your German Shepherd. It’s very versatile, can be used at any age and it only costs a few bucks at any pet supply store.

In one sentence the aim of using the clicker is to accurately mark the behaviour of the intended action.  One clicked, followed up with food (treat).

When you’re first introducing the clicker to your dog, it’s important to “charge” it. Take the first couple of days and get the dog in the habit of hearing the click then receiving a small reward in the form of a small treat.

Before we go any further we should talk about what types of treats that are best. Rewarding your dog for correct behaviour often is critical. Therefore, if we are constantly feeding our pup, we want to ensure we’re not over feeding, which could lead to weight gain. To avoid this we need to use small (pea sized), soft treats.  Avoid types that are hard and will crumble, further distracting him from the session. After the pup has mastered the basics of the command he can then be eased in to be rewarded with a favorite toy.

Now after a few days of being introduced to the tool, we are ready to put it to use. When the dog is attempting the new trick and carries it out correctly, we must immediately click and reward. This reinforces the exact behaviour we are seeking out. If they don’t achieve the result you’re looking for, we don’t click, until they get it right. Remember consistency is vital as to not confuse the dog.

Happy Clicking!
